Vol.44 no.4 includes "Ocular trauma from land mines among soldiers treated at a University Hospital in Medellín, Colombia" by Moreno et al. This study examines patients with ocular trauma from injuries sustained in military combat and the treatment and visual outcomes during the healing process. 

Soldiers who suffered land mine trauma and were studied at the Pablo Tobon Uribe Hospital. The injuries of the soldiers were sustained during the time period of January 2004 to December 2012. The medical history of 635 soldiers was examined, and 153 of the soldiers had ocular trauma. 226 eyes in total were examined. 97.3% of the eyes had medical treatment and 49.1% of them also had surgery. Open ocular trauma was observed in 29.6% of the total number of eyes examined. 11 of the 635 were declared legally blind at the time of discharge. 

The article concludes that landmines can cause extreme ocular trauma, and that more effective treatments are the primary closure of the globe and systemic antibiotics. The Ocular Trauma Score, which was calculated in 183 of the 635 eyes, could be a useful tool to determine the visual outcome of ocular trauma sustained from land mines.

Featured Issue: Revista Colombia Médica Vol.44 No.2 & 3

Today we will featuring the latest issues of Revista Colombia Médica on Bioline.

Vol.44 no.2 & 3 of the journal were updated on Bioline in October 2013. Here are some of the highlights:

No.2 includes, "HIV sexual risk behaviors in youth 15-24 years of age in Cali, Colombia: Do differences exist among neighbourhoods?" by Girón et al. This study aims to examine residents 15 to 24 years of age in different neighbourhoods in Cali, Colombia, to determine differences in HIV risk behvaviours. Communities 13, 15 and 20 underwent two stage-samplings where quantitive data was collected. Because of the different selection of youth, the results were weighted based on inverse probaility and probability of response. The results showed that in commune 20, there was a greater chance of unprotected sex of youth ages 16 to 17 and females, among others. The results also showed that in communes 13 and 15, women had 78% less of a chance of having had multiple sexual partners.

No.3 includes "The effects of socioeconomic status and short stature on overweight, obesity and the risk of metabolic complications in adults" by Álvarez et al. In this study, men and women in Medellin, Colombia were observed to assess the relationship between socioeconomic status, height, and nutritional problems related to obesity and metabolic complications. The study was conducted by taking a sample of 5556 adults between 18 and 69 years of age. Characteristics assessed were weight, height, and waist circumference. The participants were then asked questions on their family income, socioeconomic stratum and academic level. The results showed that the height of the participants was associated with socioeconomic conditions. The article concludes with a call to action for a preventive approach during childhood to prevent unhealthy eating habits and the cumulative effect of food deprivation throughout life.

Featured Issue: Revista Colombia Médica Vol. 43 No. 1

In the latest issue of Revista Colombia Médica to be uploaded to Bioline International - one study (Blood pressure by age, gender, height, and socioeconomic level in school populations in Cali, Colombia) in issue 1 of vol. 43 looked at the risk factors for blood pressure in children and adolescents, as several other studies have shown that these risk factors are indicators for cardiovascular diseases in later life. For this study, 2807 students in Cali, Colombia had their blood pressured tested as well as blood chemistry, physical work capacity, oral health, diet, and blood pressure. The study also examined the relationship between blood pressure and age, gender, height, body mass index, socioeconomic status and salt intake.
