Did you know that Pygopagus conjoined twins account for 17% of conjoined twins?

We have recently posted vol.18 no.1 of East and Central African Journal of Surgery on Bioline. The case study "Successful surgical separation of conjoined twins: First experience in Rwanda" by Nyundo et al. details the first successful separation of Pygopagus conjoined twins in Rwanda. Pygopagus conjoined twins are "joined back-to-back, facing away from each other". The article includes photos and details about the procedure, as well as more background information about conjoined twins.

Did you know that Surgical Site Infection is a cause of death among patients who undergo an operation?

In Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, this is an increasing cause of death. One study, "Risk Factors of Surgical Site Infection at Muhimbili National Hospital, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania" by Akoko et al. in East and Central African Journal of Surgery vol.17 no.3, was carried out to assess the factors associated with this increase, the prevalence of the infection and the demographics of those it affected.

Featured New Issue: East and Central African Journal of Surgery Vol. 17 No. 2

Today we are also featuring vol. 17 no. 12 of the East and Central African Journal of Surgery, updated last week on the Bioline website. One of its articles, Masquelet's Technique for Management of Long Bone Defects: From Experiment to Clinical Application, discusses the treatment of large bone defects using the Masquelet's technique. The Masquelet's technique is based on two principal steps: the formation of induction membrane and cancellous bone grafting.

Vol. 17 no. 12 also includes a study (Burnout Syndrome among Orthopaedic Surgeons in Lagos, Nigeria) on the rate of burnout syndrome among orthopaedic surgeons in Lagos State, Nigeria. 29 surgeons participated in the study by filling out a questionnaire on their demographic details.
