Accelerating Science Award Program honours Bioline International as a High-Impact Open Access Organization
Bioline International has been honoured by the Accelerating Science Award Program as a high-impact open access organization!
"This inclusion could not have come at a better time," Bioline Director, Leslie Chan says, "as we are marking the 20th anniversary of Bioline this coming December. Bioline International is the collective effort of many partners and dedicated volunteers, and the project would not be possible without the long term commitment of our collaborators at the Centro de Referência em Informação Ambiental (CRIA), based in Campinas, Brazil, and in particular the work of Sidnei de Souza." Bioline co-founder, Barbara Kirsop, has exclaimed her excitement about the award. Fellow Bioline-partner Vanderlai Canhos at CRIA celebrates Barbara in this award, remarking in an email to Barbara: "You are Bioline's mother. Without your vision, commitment and persistence there would be no Bioline... Congratulations to all the partners in this effort!"

The entire Bioline Team - spanning across the globe - wishes to extend many thanks again to the ASAP program for this honour.
The Accelerating Science Award Program (ASAP) is led by a coalition of open access organizations, such as PLOS, Google, and the Wellcome Trust. The ASAP awards celebrate "how the unrestricted exchange of information can advance science and medicine and benefit society". During Open Access Week 2013, the ASAP awards were hosted in Washington by the Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) and the World Bank. ASAP celebrated Bioline as a "High-Impact Open Access Organization" by featuring the organization in the ASAP Portfolio.
Here's to Bioline's ability to provide 20 more years and beyond of open access and distribution of scholarly research from our partner journals in their mission to improve global health through the advancement of science and medicine!

Welcome to our 2013-2014 Bioline Team! We are happy to welcome back returning students Kai-Ann, Kim, Carina, Esha and Adiba, as well as one new student, Fernando (missing from picture). We're also happy to report that Bioline is receiving the assistance of UTSC Library's new API Programmer, LingLing, and Digital Asset Management Technician, Dong. Welcome to Bioline Dong and LingLing!

Introducing You to the Latest Additions to our Bioline Team (Summer 2013)!
We are halfway through the year, and we would love to introduce you to our new Bioline Team members for Summer 2013!
ESHA HOMENAUTH
Esha is a fourth year student at the University of Toronto Scarborough currently pursuing a double major in Human Biology and Health Studies. Esha became a member of the Bioline International team in May 2013 as a Metadata Assistant. Through her studies at the University of Toronto, Esha has become familiar with scientific articles and with this knowledge together with her assertive personality and open mindedness, she assists in editing and proof-reading journal entries before they are published online. With a passion for science,she aims to further her studies in research and wishes to gain experience and knowledge during her time with Bioline International. Esha enjoys working with the Bioline team and is proud to be part of an organization that she may one day contribute research to.
JENNY NGUYEN
 Jenny is in her third year in the Management program at UTSC. She joined in September 2011 as a Publishing Assistant, now working as a Research Assistant. She brings to the team a keen eye for detail, knowledge of business models and experience in accounting. Jenny enjoyed the editing work she did as a Publishing Assistant and is very excited to see how her business knowledge will help Bioline grow. Due to her interest in sciences, and she is fascinated by the information presented in articles.
KAI-ANN FLETCHER
Kai-Ann is a third year student studying a double major in Neuroscience and Biochemistry. As a Biochemistry student, she spends a lot of time in chemistry labs, and knows what it is like to work meticulously and methodically. Past work experience has taught her to be patient and has given her the skills to process and analyze large amounts of information, which will definitely help her as a Publishing Assistant! She believes that Bioline is helping to boost the research community in developing countries by giving them a forum to share their knowledge and findings with the wider world. But best of all, she thinks that Bioline International provides the opportunity to bridge the gap that exists between the developing and developed countries through common areas of scientific research.

Introducing you to the rest of the Bioline Team!
The support of CRIA, based in Brazil, through Sidnei and Luiz's collaboration with the Bioline Team at UTSC is absolutely indispensable to Bioline's operations. Bioline is just one of many projects at CRIA and all server hosting, administration, and server development is provided to Bioline from CRIA on a volunteer basis. We asked Sidnei and Luiz to tell us a little bit more about their work with Bioline...
Sidnei de Souza
Sidnei de Souza has been with Bioline since the beginning! In fact, Sidnei developed the software to make Bioline available online during its formative years. Bioline's system has existed since 1989 and Sidnei has been responsible for updating the software to cope with the many changes in technology over the years to keep Bioline's archives compatible with new systems. Sidnei has said, "BI is a very low key system in terms of software, but for this reason tends to be very robust!" The Bioline Team at UTSC would like to thank Sidnei for all of his help and guidance over the years.
 CRIA's primary role in Bioline operations is to keep the system up and running, and process updates requested by the team at UTSC. Luiz Henrique Barione is responsible for updating the material sent to CRIA by Bioline staff at UTSC. Luiz then gives feedback to the UTSC team on any potential problems he finds in the files. Luiz also maintains Bioline's access stats, as well as keeping the basic software up to date. Luiz is also responsible for keeping the Bioline hardware in a good shape, making regular backups, and making sure that the connectivity is guaranteed. Thank you, Luiz, for all of your hard work!

Introducing you to the 2012-2013 Bioline Team...
To start off the 2013 Bioline year, we'd like to introduce you to the Bioline Team at University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. Our team includes a few new faces who have been working hard since 2012 to update the Bioline website. We have a lot of plans for 2013 and are very excited to keep you updated with the latest Bioline news through our blog - stay tuned! In the meantime, meet the 2012-2013 Bioline Team:
LESLIE CHAN
 Leslie Chan is the Director of Bioline International. His passion for open access and sharing of knowledge and information has greatly contributed to Bioline International's success over the years. As the Program Supervisor of the University of Toronto Scarborough's International Development Studies program, Leslie is interested in how the global flow of information affects international development. He has worked with organizations such as UNESCO, IDRC and Open Society Institute and is also a Trustee of the Electronic Publishing Trust for Development. Leslie continues to oversee Bioline International's operations and development and looks forward to Bioline’s continuous contributions to the scholarly community.
KELLI BABCOCK
 Kelli Babcock is a Special Projects Librarian working with the University of Toronto Scarborough Library. She joined Bioline International in April 2012 to coordinate, develop and standardize Bioline's organizational infrastructure. Kelli is contributing to Bioline's development through her knowledge and interest in web publishing, metadata standards and open access initiatives in the academic library community. Kelli has enjoyed collaborating with the UTSC Bioline Team, member journals, and Bioline’s partners at CRIA in Brazil. She encourages everyone to keep their eyes open for Bioline's progress in 2013.
NIVEDA ANANDAN
 Niveda is a fourth year student at University of Toronto Scarborough majoring in Psychology and English Literature with a minor in Biology. She joined Bioline International in September 2012 as a Publishing Assistant with the goal of ensuring that the scientific research of developing nations is recognized and acknowledged by the global scientific community. Niveda is extremely excited about joining the Bioline team this year and hopes to do her part in ensuring that the organization flourishes.
ADIBA ASHRAF
 Adiba is a second year Business Management student at University of Toronto Scarborough. She started working with Bioline in June 2012 as a Publishing Assistant and is currently working as a Research Assistant with the Bioline team. What really interests her about Bioline is its dedication to using knowledge to connect people from different parts of the world. Bioline has also given Adiba invaluable work experience that has allowed her to develop her skill set. She believes the Bioline team consists of some really great people and she loves the fun and enjoyable work environment of the Bioline Office.
IAN REYES
 Ian is a fourth year student studying Human Biology at University of Toronto Scarborough. He joined Bioline International in September 2012 to help with the processing and analysis of metadata. Ian's familiarity with the content and terminology of journals from the scientific community, his previous experience with program coding language, as well as being a quick learner are all assets to the Bioline Team. He hopes to expand his knowledge of research with his work at Bioline. He believes that Bioline International can grow and develop to become the number one go-to source for research journals from developing countries.
CARINA CARIANOPOL
 Carina is a Metadata Assistant with Bioline International. She is a third year student at University of Toronto Scarborough, studying Human Biology and Biochemistry. She joined Bioline International in September 2011. She uses her science background as well as her attention to detail to process, proof-read and edit journal articles before they are published to Bioline's website. As an aspiring scientist herself, Carina enjoys working for Bioline International by helping scientists all over the world gain visibility on the web. She also supports Bioline’s ability to provide students with free access to scientific research from all over the globe. She believes that Bioline International will continue to grow through the coming years, and will become even more popular in the near future.
KIMBERLY AGLIPAY
 Kimberly is a second year Journalism student at University of Toronto Scarborough. She was excited to become part of the Bioline International team in September 2012 as a Publishing Assistant to assist with the expansion and updating of Bioline's blog and social media outlets. She brings her passion for writing, journalism, and overall enthusiasm to learn more about other countries to the Bioline Team. She also shares Bioline's dedication to give journals published in developing countries more exposure and access through the work of Bioline. Kimberly hopes that everyone will connect and take part in Bioline's growth and progress by subscribing to our Twitter, Facebook, blog, and future networking sites.
